Joby Taylor (Paul Dano) plays a struggling musician, complete with piercings, black nail paintand tattoos.His wife, Claire (Margarita Levieva) left him, taking their young daughter Ellen (Shaylena Mandigo) along. One night he takes a road tripto sign the divorce papers with Claire. Once he reaches there he talks to his lawyer, Fred (Jon Heder) who is an ineffectual mama’s boy. He learns that if he does not negotiate this correctly, he will lose all parental rights and will never be able to see Ellen again.

Joby’s head is suddenly wrenched from the clouds and he makes a last ditch attempt to reconnect with the daughter he never really paid any attention to. He requests a visit with her and they spend the afternoon in the local mall and a snow bound park. Shaylena Mandigo plays Ellen with a quiet innocence that tugs at the chords of the viewer’s heart.

Joby doesn’t exactly inspire sympathy and one can see why Claire left him and wants sole custody of Ellen. But as the movie wears on at a deliberately slow pace, his struggle for self realization is admirable. The viewer wants to believe that the deadbeat dad can turn things around and love his daughter as much as his dreams.

So Yong Kim directed and wrote the screenplay for the movie, based on her childhood. She co-produced it along with husband Bradley Rust Gray and Jen Gatien. Once you move beyond the glacial pace, you will see that this wholly original, low budget film is the study of a flawed character trying to be a better man. Whether or not he is successful, it’s his journey that the director wants us to focus on.
