Tom Hardy is cast as the soft spoken older brother Forrest Bondurant, the only survivor of his troop in the Great War. Jason Clarke plays Howard, the middle brother. He survived the Spanish Flu epidemic that killed their parents, adding to the indestructible aura around the Bondurant family. And then there’s Jack (Shia LaBeouf), the youngest brother, very unlike the other two, but desperately trying to prove that he’s cut from the same cloth.

This trio of bootleggers makes moonshine in the nearby hills, and now the corrupt officials want in. They call in Special Agent Charlie Rakes, a demented sadist, to make the brothers pay protection. Guy Pearce plays this psychopath extremely well, with his wonderful Chicago accent, the creepy impish laugh and slicked back hair. To stop the movie from falling too far into clichés, Jessica Chastain plays Maggie, a former stripper wanting a fresh start. Forrest gives her a job and a slow romance blossoms between the two. Mia Wasikowska plays Bertha, Jack’s love interest. And there’s Gary Oldman, the baroque old school gangster Floyd Banner, with a woefully short, albeit memorable screen time.
