The movie is unexpected, to say the least. The pace is non-uniform; the characters aren’t what you’d call likeable; the ending is ambiguous and you do not know what opinions director and writer Paul Anderson wants you to form. He’s the WW2 veteran Freddie, who is jobless post the war; constantly drinking the moonshine he’s brewing for himself, and unable to contain his sexual urges. He meets Lancaster Dodd, a cult leader whose followers just call him The Master. He decides to help Freddie set his life right, and Freddie soon becomes his right hand man who quells anyone who disrupts or voices their opinion against the cult. But he soon begins to question Dodd’s beliefs. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, of the Capote fame, plays Dodd, and Amy Adams, from The Fighter, plays his wife.
